NextOS E-waste Management

NextOS, as the flagship product of Next Education, believes in and practices proper recycling of E-waste and encourages our partners and stakeholders to do the same. E-waste is a term for unwanted, non-working or obsolete electronic products that have essentially reached the end of their useful life. As per E-waste (Management) Rules 2016, E-waste is defined as electrical and electronic equipment waste, discarded by consumers, refurbished and rejected by manufacturing industries wholly or partially. There are many benefits of properly disposing of E-waste and protecting our environment to achieve sustainability for future generations.

E-waste contains many valuable materials, such as aluminium, copper, gold, silver, and ferrous metals, which can be recovered through extraction. In order to preserve natural resources and energy, electronic equipment can be refurbished, reused, or recycled. This will help protect the soil and water by leaching harmful and toxic substances such as lead, mercury, chromium, beryllium, cadmium and chemical flame retardants.

The fact that India generates more than two million tonnes of e-waste annually is alarming. More than 95% of E-waste in India is processed by a widely distributed network of under-trained and less skilled workers and waste pickers who collect, dismantle and recycle it. Most of the time, they operate illegally outside any regulated or formal organisational system. The non-official workers deploy crude methods for extracting reusable components and precious metals like gold, silver, titanium, palladium, copper and tin from the E-wastes. This two-step process involves acid burning and open incineration, creating toxic gases with severe health and environmental consequences.

This programme is to create awareness among participants for proper E-waste recycling by approved recyclers. To meet this requirement, the Government of India has made it obligatory in the E-Waste Rules 2016 to recycle E-waste only through authorised recyclers. Authorised recyclers ensure that:

  • The facility and recycling processes follow the standards or guidelines the Central Pollution Control Board prescribes.
  • No damage is caused to the environment during the storage and transportation of E-waste.
  • Recycling processes do not adversely affect the health of living beings and the environment.
  • Residue generated during the recycling process is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner in an authorised treatment storage facility.

The benefits of recycling E-waste:

  • It protects the environment and your surroundings. Creating a safe way to recycle outdated electronics promotes a rational way to manage toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury.
  • It conserves natural resources and energy. Recycling recovers useful materials from old electronics, which can be used to create new products. The outcome will include saving energy by reducing greenhouse gases and protecting natural resources through extraction.
  • It helps the people in need - Donating used electronics benefits the community by passing on refurbished and ready-to-use equipment to those who need it.
  • It saves landfill space—E-waste is a continuously growing waste stream, and recycling waste materials can conserve a lot of landfill space.

Recycling of E-waste:

As a responsible social organisation, Next Education has tied up with E-waste Recyclers India to collect all our e-waste across India. Customers can contact us at Toll-Free No. 1800-200-5566. Our representatives will explain the process of disposal to them and educate them about following proper disposal methods and reaching the nearest drop point for dumping the waste in a responsible manner. They will also give information about the incentives that we offer to them for their end-of-life product.

Dos & Don'ts

Dos:

  • Always look for information on your product's end-of-life equipment handling in the catalogue
  • Always ensure that you hand over the e-waste to authorised collectors and recyclers to handle your electronic waste products.
  • Once they reach the end of their life, always contact your nearest Authorised E-Waste Collection Centre to dispose of your used electronic accessories, products, or batteries.
  • Always detach the battery from the product before throwing it away and ensure that any glass component is protected against breakage.

Don'ts:

  • Do not try to dismantle electronic products by yourself
  • Do not discard or throw away electronics in bins with a "Do not Dispose of" sign.
  • Do not hand over e-waste to people from unorganised sectors like local scrap dealers or rag-pickers.
  • Do not throw your product in household garbage bins collected by Municipal garbage collectors, which ultimately reach landfills.
